Third Article Review (Political/Social Issues):
Lawyers can seek earlier access to accused persons

Newslink - "Lawyers can seek earlier access to accused persons"

In an article on Friday, April 27 2007, the Law Society of Singapore has told lawyers that they can request access to an accused person during his remand period so long as it does not provide any interference to any police investigations which are going on.

In my opinion, this new project that the police had undertaken is bringing us a step closer towards fairer treatment to all persons before the Law. I personally applaud this move as I believe it is essential to uphold equality in our judiciary system, and to also ensure fairness to everyone.

Singapore’s Constitution states that any accused person is allowed to seek legal counsel, so why the irony for keeping one in remand during investigations? According to a minister, this system is in place to allow “police officers to conduct investigations freely and effectively”. However, if you put yourself in the accused shoes, how would it feel to have your rights being infringed on and not being able to understand how better to help yourself?

Nonetheless, I know I am rather naive to think that equality and fairness can be upheld all the time for everyone, including criminals and murderers. I also acknowledge that fact that we must not overlook the importance to ensure fairness to the victim, and the need for the police to complete a thorough and effective investigation before any trial and prosecution.

However, upon taking the police’s point of view, this precaution is logical in the sense that it will prevent any possible tampering of essential evidences that are related to the case, if the accused was allowed to meet up with his lawyer, which may cause an impediment to the working of justice.

In my opinion, if the victim is placed in any disadvantage because of any interference in the police’s investigation, then I think the purpose of ensuring fairness to the accused by allowing him to meet his lawyer is completely lost. I acknowledge that not being in the police can make me unable to apprehend the need for precautions they have to take to ensure that no one is maligned of any charges. However I do know the difficulty of being an arm of Law, and the need to maintain a unbiased stand during all investigations.

However, standing in other country’s perspective, they may say that Singapore is being a paranoid country for not upholding individual rights as one of its basic principles. As a democratic country, I admit Singapore is not doing enough to safeguard personal and individual interest.

But still, we must understand that it is all these stringent checks and rules that are in place that ensures us a safe and peaceful place to live in as compared to many more “liberal” and “open” countries.

All in all, I believe that it’s a good step that the police have taken to uphold individual rights and personal freedom, but still there is more to be done provided that it does not compromise anyone who is involved.

Finally! Math CCT over and Chinese project finished! YAY! I'm really VERY happy now.. Though I screwed up a few marks in Math, I think it's still quite okay.. Anyway, I must really thank Kenneth for putting in so much time and effort as compared to me in the Chinese Project, if not for him, I dun think our project can be so nice.. XD (Must not forget about the one day off on Mon!)

Yesterday's Learning Journey day was quite cool too! Went to the Battle Box and saw many stuff like General Percival and cool statues made up of plasticine? I dunno... But anyway, I went to Changi Chapel and Museum again (went one in Sec 1), and still gained new insights and saw some nice artifacts. Finally the Kranji Memorial site, it was quite a solemn place but the most interesting thing that I saw, must be the symbolic building that is a tribute to the Navy, Army and Air Force. Perhaps you wouldn't understand what I mean if u didn't go there [I'll try to learn how to post a picture in my blog =) ]

Before ending, hope you can go to this blog to have a look! This blog is really very interesting.. Seriously! Here's the link : LaoZhaBor! XD

Have a good weekend then! =)

Hey! So sorry that I've not updated my blog for so long, and I think I won't be able to post any more till this thurs again. I had been bogged down by many commitments and tests! Speaking of test, my Math PT is screwed up. Haiz... Hope I can do better in the next one then.

BUT... talking about the happier stuff in life! I shall share with you what happened in class today...

-Over the PA system-
"GOOD MORNING SCHOOL! We've got GOOD news! OUR C DIVISION BADMINTON OBTAINED A GOLD!!!"

After that, my whole class started to cheer! Display of the Rafflesian Spirit! XD Anyway, I felt that it was very funny too.. It was like.. SUDDENLY, we heard someone shouting in a PA system.. lol... Although I thought the whole thing was quite random, I'm still quite happy because we won a Sports Gold! =)

Raffles rocks! Yeah!

To start off, I would like to quote Jerald from one of our msn conversations before SYF. Here goes:

"100,000s of litres of tears, sweat and blood shed.
-10,000s of scoldings, remarks, and lessons learnt.
--1,000s of hours spent worrying about this day.
----100s of hard, hard practices.
-----10 minutes: the time on stage.
------1 SYF. It all comes down to this."

Now that our SYF is over, I must say that I was very proud to be one of those who screamed and shouted "YES!!!" when we achieved Gold with Honours. Seeing how some people around me was moved to tears made me think about us sharing pain, feeling joy, and shedding blood (Gan bled during practice) together in this whole long and tedious SYF journey, including listening to my friend Jia Xuan's funny jokes in practises, made me just want to say 1 thing: I'm very proud to be part of RIGE.

Being someone who played my small part in making this great history (first Gold with Honours for RIGE) with all others, I seriously wouldn't mind going through this whole process, from the first day I learned my SYF piece, Sevilla from Mr Gaspar (my conductor) till playing together with all others in the ensemble for today's SCH performance, once more. This SYF experience will be something that I'll nvr ever forget in my life.

Finally, I would like to thank everyone for encouraging, supporting and congratulating me. Thanks guys for everything... =)

I woke up early early in the morning and made my way down to Plaza Singapura from Woodlands! Quite far eh? Took me about 1 hr plus to go there and finally in the end didn't manage to buy anything.. Haiz, perhaps it's my fault...

But after having quite a delicious lunch there, I went back to school for guitar practice via MRT. So before I entered Dhoby Ghaut station, I managed to buy a box of octopus balls for some snack. The first one that I ate was really delicious.. It was cheesy (I love cheese.. Yum!), had texture and was piping hot! However, I made a grave mistake after that, to put it inside my bag thinking that the contents wouldn't spill out... :( I was wrong, but I only realised that after taking the MRT in the wrong direction and thinking "OMG!" before feeling warmth and wetness in the bag. (Now my bag stinks.)

Enough about the bad stuff... Talking about taking the MRT, I saw a very interesting advertisement on it this morning. It was about Lipton tea leaves containing some Theamine thingy that can make you relaxed and alert at the same time. ( 0.o I thought that was quite interesting...) So I continued reading it, and found some lame jokes too! So here are the better ones. :)

1. Q: What answer can you never say "yes" to?
    A: Are you asleep?

2. Q: What can you add to a barrel full of water without         making any of it to spill out?
    A: Holes!

Lol... So that's all from me. (Better not be so long-winded...) Cya then!

p.s. Just realised that it was Friday, the 13th.. Hmmm...

Today was Arts at the Atrium, and guess wat? We screwed up. Screwed up bad. It's like OMG... Everybody was so tense and couldn't even play with confidence! According to my conductor, the whole Singapore Conference Hall will be filled up during our performance because we're the last to perform. If now like that also can screw up, then go for SYF how? GG? Haiz.. I'm very depressed now. =(

BUT, there's still something to look forward to tmr! We'll be having a trip to Plaza Singapura to buy our Class Deco stuff, but then after that need to rush back to sch for GE again.. (Cannot go catch a movie with my friends) Hopefully, the effort and time we sacrificed for this class deco competition will pay off and let us win some prizes!

That's all for today I guess. Not in a mood to blog too much.. :'(

Cya then...

Hey! 3 days since the last post eh? So let me start from Saturday...

On Saturday, I had RIGE practice in the afternoon from 1-3pm. Missed piano lesson for it but found out that there are still ppl who pon training even though SYF is like less than 2 weeks away?! Really quite sad... But never mind, most of us are ready for the competition and hungry for the GWH and we WILL get it! In the later half of the day, me and my dad went to have a buffet dinner (mum not in Sg, so only both of us). Yum yum... I ate noodles, oysters, fish, roasted chicken, salmon (raw! IT WAS SOOOO FRESH!), chocolate-covered marshmallows (omg... they just melt in your mouth) and strawberries. Finally for desert, a Mega Big Scoop of vanilla ice-cream! I really ate until my stomach was filled like a giant balloon. BUT, guess what, everything was free! My dad had some vouchers for this restaurant and we had a free meal! =) Quite cool eh?

But on Sunday, my dad went to play golf and left me alone at home. (Reminds you of the movie "Home Alone"?) So I did some work at home and managed to cram in about an hour of computer game!.So long since I played... However, my dad came back earlier at about 5 plus, and brought me out for dinner again, and we went to SWENSENS (my favourite restaurant)!!! =)) Hopefully, "2 days of good food = increase in weight"? My family always complain that I'm skinny.. Haiz.

Finally, today was quite a tiring day. Had Triple Science on one day! The weight of the bag is really a killer (3 science textbooks)... But LjS didn't come to school today because he's sick. Hope he gets well soon then.

I think that's all for today. Will blog again soon... Cya then!

Sry for not posting for such a long time.. Caught up in so many things like tests, assignments and nonsensical stuff. This few weeks had been rather tiring and hectic, but glad it's all over! :D

Today was interesting because I just went to celebrate my old friend, Sophia's, birthday! We (me and another 2 friends) bought her a nice little present together... I thought it was quite nice too.

So, we celebrated her birthday at Causeway Point (anybody knows where it is?) and went to eat at "Yoshinoya" (went there for the second time only). I ate a teriyaki chicken set which tasted quite delicious. But spent about $7 for the whole meal... Haiz, quite expensive. Then I bought present at the last minute for another friend who had birthday a few days ago.. Quite embarrassed to be reminded to buy a present eh, especially by the girl herself? Me and another boy had to run all around the whole shopping centre and finally bought a present..

I'm quite happy that I got to go out after such a long time, and I really feel sad for someone who couldn't go out because he was sick. =( Hope to have more of these 6Kians gatherings! =) I think that's all for this post then. Will try to update again. Till then.. Cya!
